White quinoa has been grown for 6,000 years in the highlands of the Andes. In these special high-altitude areas, hardly any other plant species thrive, so quinoa alongside amaranth is the main source of income for people in the Andean regions. Quinoa is harvested partly by hand. The plants are cut with a sickle and laid out in bundles to dry.
The pseudocereal gained fame in 1993 through a NASA report, in which it was classified as particularly suitable due to its nutrients and at the same time undemanding to soil, for use in space stations or extraterrestrial colonies.
Use
White quinoa is characterized by its mild, slightly nutty flavor. White quinoa goes well with vegetables, fresh herbs and takes on spices particularly well. The small white quinoa grains cook fluffy and grainy and can be used like rice or couscous. White quinoa is ideal as a fine side dish, ingredient for creative salads or as an extraordinary stir-fry dish.
