According to Ayurveda teachings, spices and herbs help maintain the balance of the Doshas on a subtle energetic level. In Ayurveda, they are an important part of daily nutrition. They provide the body with sufficient secondary plant compounds and corresponding rasas and gunas (taste and properties of plants) and thereby harmonize digestion. However, they alone do not replace a healthy, balanced diet.
The mode of action of Ayurvedic herbs is based on traditional knowledge of Indian medicine and works at the level of the Doshas. An effect in the sense of modern Western science is therefore not claimed. In particular, the aspect of Dosha balance has no counterpart in our science, so there is no confirmation for the effects described in Ayurveda in the sense of Western science.
