Vitex, also known as chaste tree (Keuschlamm, not Keu-Schlamm ;) ), is a small, very mild seed that is only loosely related to actual pepper. Its spiciness is gentler than that of black Pfeffer and is suitable for light sauces and poultry.
In the medieval monastery gardens, alongside spice and medicinal plants, species that served to “abstain from worldly love” also grew. The monks could use the sharply flavored seeds as a spice for their dishes. In the Middle Ages, Vitex became a symbol of the abstinent monk's life - hence its names "Keuschlamm" and "Liebfrauenbettstroh".
