Every cell in the body requires oxygen along with glucose for energy production. Iron-containing hemoglobin in red blood cells absorbs oxygen in the lungs and transports it via blood circulation to the cells. During growth years, iron is needed for the development of hemoglobin, the blood pigment responsible for oxygen transport.
Children and adolescents may have increased iron requirements during their growth. Side effects of growth can include fatigue, reduced concentration, and less motivation. Particularly in girls, iron requirements may increase after menstruation begins. Even during times of high mental challenges, iron supports normal, vital cognitive development.
